Another great line from the New Yorker: "the mark of a city worth living in is that there are never enough places to park."
I guess that's why I can't move to California.

Great comment. I never thought of it that way before. But to design an urban area where there's enough destinations worth walking to, where it is possible to walk or take public transit, you're not going to have acres of asphalt everywhere for people to plunk their vehicles.
Although I have to say that Boston's underground parking garage below the Commons, with $10 parking after 4 pm or on weekend days, is a nice compromise, allowing people to drive in and park at off-peak times.
Drive, park once, walk to many possible destinations is still a decent model if the parking is unobtrusive to the public space.

I totally agree. The Boston parking management model you cited is also great because it generates revenue for the Commons, helping to keep it public. Thanks for commenting Sharon!
